How insurance works at our independent pharmacy

Cape Coral has one of the largest Medicare-eligible populations in Florida — by some estimates, more than 30% of residents are over 65. That’s why we built TRx Pharmacy from day one to work with the plans our neighbors actually carry. Whether you just turned 65 and signed up for Medicare Part D, you’re a retired veteran on Tricare, or you carry a Florida Blue plan through your employer, your prescriptions cost the same here as they do at the big chains — but the wait time, the pharmacist time, and the personal care don’t even compare.

Three things that make us different

No insurance? You still have great options.

If you’re uninsured, underinsured, or your copay seems unreasonable, ask us. We participate in GoodRx, SingleCare, and WellRx discount programs, and we maintain our own lowest-price guarantee — if any local pharmacy beats our cash price on a common generic, we’ll match it. Many patients leave paying $4–$10 for a 30-day supply of common generics without using insurance at all.

Frequently asked questions

Real questions from real Cape Coral patients about how insurance works at an independent pharmacy. Short answers, no marketing fluff.

Yes — every major Medicare Part D plan in Florida. SilverScript, Wellcare, Humana, AARP/UnitedHealthcare, Aetna, Cigna, Mutual of Omaha, and dozens more. Your copay at TRx will be identical to what you’d pay at CVS, Walgreens, or Publix — but the wait is much shorter, and we’ll actually sit down with you to make sure your plan’s preferred drug list is the cheapest option for your specific medications. We can also help during the annual Open Enrollment period (Oct 15 – Dec 7) by running side-by-side comparisons of how your current prescriptions would cost on different plans.

Yes. We’re a participating Florida Medicaid pharmacy and we work with every Medicaid Managed Care plan in our area, including Sunshine Health, Staywell (now Wellcare of Florida), Molina Healthcare, Prestige Health Choice, Aetna Better Health, and Humana Healthy Horizons. Most Medicaid covered medications have a $0 to $4 copay.

Yes — Tricare Prime, Select, For Life, and Reserve Select are all accepted. We’re a Tricare retail network pharmacy, so your copays follow standard Tricare retail pricing: typically $0 for generics on the formulary, modest copays for brand-name and non-formulary drugs. We also handle Tricare’s mail-order coordination for the few medications they require be filled via mail.

Call us with the card in hand and we’ll look you up in our pharmacy system in under a minute. We process plans through every major Pharmacy Benefit Manager (PBM): Express Scripts, CVS Caremark, OptumRx, MedImpact, Navitus, Prime Therapeutics, and EnvisionRx. If your card has a BIN, PCN, and Group number on the back, we can almost certainly process it.

Yes — insurance copays are set by your plan, not by the pharmacy. Your tier-1 generic that’s $5 at CVS will be $5 at TRx. The difference is that we’ll often find cash-pay programs that are cheaper than your copay and proactively offer them to you — something the big chains rarely bother doing. About one in seven of our patients saves money each month by paying cash on a specific medication instead of using insurance.

We honor GoodRx, SingleCare, WellRx, and InsideRx coupons in-store. We also have our own internal cash-pay pricing on common generics — many run $4 for a 30-day supply or $10 for a 90-day supply, no coupon needed. For more expensive medications, we help patients apply to manufacturer Patient Assistance Programs (PAPs) which can often supply brand-name drugs free or for a heavily reduced cost.

We can’t bill the VA directly, but many veterans receiving partial VA care still need a community pharmacy for non-VA prescriptions or for urgent fills when VA mail-order won’t arrive in time. We work closely with veterans at Bay Pines VA and the Fort Myers CBOC to fill those gaps — and we accept Tricare for those who maintain it alongside VA care.

We accept HSA, FSA, and HRA debit cards just like any other payment method. Your pharmacy expenses are eligible IRS Section 213(d) medical expenses, so if you carry a high-deductible health plan with an HSA, you can use those pre-tax dollars at our counter. We provide year-end medication purchase summaries on request.

Bring us your insurance card. We’ll do the math.
